The book “Dowsing for Beginners” by Keith Morgan is a short introductory guide to the practice of dowsing — the traditional art of locating hidden things through intuitive or energetic sensitivity.

Morgan presents dowsing as both a practical skill and a psychic discipline. The book introduces beginners to classic dowsing tools such as:

  • Pendulums
  • L-rods and divining rods
  • Hazel twigs and forked branches
  • Simple hand dowsing methods

This book focuses on “practical and simple methods,” making it accessible to readers with no previous experience rather than get into the complex and more in depth details of dowsing. As such, it’s a great book for total beginners and makes a good primer for more in depth study.

The tone of the work fits very much within the canon of Morgan’s work. It was written as the modern Western esoteric and New Age traditions where getting into dowsing dowsing . It can be a powerful tool , not merely as a way of finding underground water, but also as a technique for:

  • locating lost objects,
  • sensing earth energies,
  • detecting ley lines or geopathic stress,
  • and strengthening intuition or psychic awareness.

As with all of this series of books, the typeface is bold and clear and the illustrations are simple but effective.

Historically, dowsing has deep roots in European folk practice. Water diviners — sometimes called “water witches” or “well witches” — used forked sticks to locate underground springs. By the 19th and 20th centuries, occultists and spiritualists expanded the practice into radiesthesia: the belief that subtle energies can be detected through the nervous system and subconscious mind.

The book is valued mainly as a simple introductory manual rather than an academic study. Readers interested in advanced dowsing techniques often move on to more detailed works covering:

  • map dowsing,
  • archaeological dowsing,
  • radionics,
  • earth energies,
  • and pendulum healing.

As with all of Morgan’s early work the book is long out of print and not available online as an ebook that I can find. You could try eBay or Etsy to find a copy.
