Sphalerite, also known as zinc blende and black-jack, is a zinc sulfide mineral that crystallises in the form of masses, botryoidal, cubes, tetrahedral crystals, and dodecahedral crystals.
It’s most commonly silver and grey, but can also be seen as red, black, yellow, brown, green, and colorless. Sphalerite was discovered in 1847 by E.F. Glocker and was named after the Greek word meaning “treacherous”. Like most minerals during this time period, crystals that looked similar were just called under the same name. Sphalerite got its name from it constantly being confused with Galena.

Cleansing Its Energy
These are the most common methods used, chosen to suit its nature:
• Smudging: Pass the stone gently through the smoke of sage, palo santo, or incense. This is one of the best ways for sphalerite, as it’s gentle and doesn’t involve contact with water or other substances.
• Sound: Ring a singing bowl, bell, or tuning fork near it — the vibrations are believed to clear stagnant energy very effectively, and it’s completely safe for the stone.
• Moonlight: Place it somewhere safe where it can soak up soft moonlight, especially during a full moon. It’s thought to refresh and recharge its energy beautifully.
• Breath: Hold the stone, breathe deeply, and then blow gently onto it while focusing on releasing anything it has absorbed — simple, quick, and works well too.
What to avoid: Try not to use salt water or bury it in salt, as salt can be abrasive and might damage or discolor the surface. Also, it’s best not to leave it out in strong, direct sunlight for too long, as some colored sphalerite may fade over time.
Since it only scores 3.5–4 on the hardness scale, it can scratch easily, so keep it separate from harder stones like quartz or topaz when you’re storing it — a soft pouch or cloth bag is ideal. If you need to clean any dirt or dust off it, just wipe it gently with a soft, slightly damp cloth, and dry it straight away. Don’t soak it in water, and never use harsh chemicals or cleaners on it.
