Theosophy in Modern Times Part 2: The key books
Isis Unveiled: A Master-Key to the Mysteries of Ancient and Modern Science and Theosophy
This is the groundbreaking first major work by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831–1891), the Russian occultist and co-founder of the Theosophical Society. Published in 1877 in two hefty volumes, the book spans over 1,200 pages and serves as a bold critique of 19th-century materialism in science and dogmatic religion, while advocating for an ancient “Wisdom-Religion” that unites Eastern and Western esoteric traditions.
Blavatsky, often known as Madame Blavatsky, drew from her claimed travels and studies with Eastern adepts to argue that true knowledge lies in mystical experience rather than empirical science or ecclesiastical authority alone. She positioned the book as a “plea for the recognition of the Hermetic philosophy, the anciently universal Wisdom-Religion, as the only possible key to the Absolute in science and theology.”
Structure and Content
The work is divided into two volumes:
• Volume I: Science – Challenges the “infallibility” of modern science, exploring occult forces, psychic phenomena, elementals, and the hidden aspects of nature and humanity. Blavatsky discusses topics like reincarnation, the ether as a primal force, and cyclical evolution, contrasting them with emerging theories like Darwinism.
• Volume II: Theology – Examines parallels between Christianity and ancient religions (e.g., Buddhism, Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, and the Vedas), positing a perennial philosophy (prisca theologia) where all faiths stem from a single ancient source.
Blavatsky synthesises ideas from Neo-Platonism, Hermeticism, Kabbalah, and Eastern mysticism, reinterpreting them amid contemporary debates.
Reception and Criticism
Upon release, Isis Unveiled caused a sensation, selling out its first printing quickly and attracting intellectuals disillusioned with orthodox religion and science. However, it faced sharp criticism: detractors like William Emmette Coleman accused Blavatsky of extensive plagiarism from contemporary occult sources, and some labeled it pseudoscience or a “hodge-podge” of mythology and fantasy. Blavatsky acknowledged imperfections, attributing some to collaborators like Henry Steel Olcott, and later clarified doctrines in works like The Secret Doctrine (1888). (Discussed later in this article)
Key Concepts in Isis Unveiled Volume I: Science
Volume I (1877) critiques 19th-century materialistic science, arguing it is dogmatic and incomplete. Blavatsky champions ancient esoteric knowledge as the true key to understanding nature.
Main Concepts:
1. Critique of Scientific Dogma
Modern science is arrogant and limited; it ignores occult forces and will see many theories overturned.
2. Occult Forces in Nature
Unseen energies (e.g., psychic, magnetic, vital) govern reality; phenomena like mesmerism and hypnosis prove their existence.
3. Elementals
Invisible beings tied to the four elements that influence natural and psychic events.
4. Psychic & Spiritualist Phenomena
Genuine mediumship, apparitions, and levitation are real but operate via occult laws, not spirits of the dead.
5. Human Constitution
Humans have multiple layers: physical body, astral body, soul, and divine spirit—explaining psychic abilities and immortality.
6. Ancient Wisdom-Religion
A universal esoteric tradition (Hermetic philosophy) once unified science and spirituality; modern science has lost this holistic view.
7. Cyclical Evolution
Cosmic and human development follows cycles, not linear progress; hints at reincarnation (developed more fully later).
Key Concepts in Isis Unveiled Volume II: Theology
Volume II (1877) critiques religious dogma and ecclesiastical authority, arguing that modern Christianity (and other organized religions) has distorted an ancient universal Wisdom-Religion. Blavatsky uses comparative religion to reveal shared esoteric truths across traditions.
Main Concepts:
1. Critique of Religious Dogma
Organized religions, especially Christianity, are corruptions of original teachings; priests and theologians suppress esoteric knowledge for power.
2. Perennial Philosophy (Universal Wisdom-Religion)
All major religions stem from a single ancient source—an esoteric “Secret Doctrine” known to initiates in Egypt, India, Chaldea, etc.
3. Parallels Between Religions
Christianity borrows heavily from older faiths: e.g., Virgin birth, Trinity, and miracles echo Krishna, Buddha, Zoroaster, and pagan myths.
4. Esoteric vs. Exoteric Teachings
Religions have outer (public, literal) and inner (secret, symbolic) meanings; true spirituality lies in the esoteric, hidden from the masses.
5. Kabbalah and Eastern Esotericism
The Jewish Kabbalah, Hindu Vedas, and Buddhist doctrines contain the same occult truths, misinterpreted by modern scholars.
6. Origins of Christian Doctrines
Jesus as a historical figure and adept; many Gospel events are allegorical, derived from pre-Christian sources like Essenes and Gnostics.
7. Hidden Masters and Adepts
Enlightened beings (Mahatmas) preserve the ancient wisdom; they guide humanity’s spiritual evolution.
Legacy
Despite controversies, scholars today recognize Isis Unveiled as a milestone in Western esotericism, influencing modern occultism, New Age thought, and comparative religion. It helped popularize concepts like karma, reincarnation, and hidden masters (adepts) in the West, laying the foundation for Theosophy’s global impact. The book remains a dense, challenging read—repetitive and quotation-heavy—but rewarding for those exploring the intersections of spirituality, science, and ancient wisdom. Abridged editions exist for modern readers seeking its core insights without the original’s exhaustive citations.

The Arcane Heart of The Secret Doctrine: Key Teachings Unveiled
Helena Petrovna Blavatsky’s The Secret Doctrine (1888), her monumental synthesis of ancient wisdom, science, religion, and philosophy, rests upon the archaic Stanzas of Dzyan—mysterious verses from a primordial text guarded in hidden sanctuaries. These stanzas form the core, commented upon extensively by Blavatsky to reveal the esoteric doctrine underlying all world religions and philosophies.
The work divides into two volumes: Cosmogenesis (the origin and evolution of the universe) and Anthropogenesis (the origin and evolution of humanity). At its foundation lie three fundamental propositions, which Blavatsky declares essential for understanding the entire system:
1. An Omnipresent, Eternal, Boundless, and Immutable Principle—the One Absolute Reality, beyond human conception, often symbolized as the “Unknown Root” or “Be-ness.” This is the changeless source from which all manifests, transcending space, time, and attributes. It is the metaphysical ONE, akin to the Hindu Parabrahman or the Kabbalistic Ain Soph.
2. The Eternity and Periodicity of the Universe—The absolute universality of cycles: manifestation alternates with dissolution (manvantara and pralaya) in eternal flux, like the “Great Breath” of inhalation and exhalation. There is no beginning or end; universes emerge, evolve, and recede in endless succession.
3. The Fundamental Identity of All Souls with the Universal Over-Soul—Every monad (individual spark) is identical with the divine essence and must undergo the obligatory pilgrimage through cycles of incarnation, governed by Karma (cause and effect) and reincarnation. Evolution is a spiritual journey toward self-conscious unity with the Divine.
These propositions underpin the doctrine’s view that the universe is illusory (Maya) in its manifested form—temporary and relative—yet rooted in eternal truth.
Central to both cosmos and humanity is the sevenfold constitution: Everything unfolds in sevens—seven principles, planes, globes, and forces. In man, this manifests as the seven principles:
Atma (universal spirit)
• Buddhi (spiritual soul)
• Manas (mind, higher and lower)
• Kama (desire/astral body)
• Prana (life force)
• Lingasharira (astral model)
• Sthula Sharira (physical body)
Human evolution occurs through seven Root-Races on our planetary chain of seven globes, each race progressing spiritually and physically across vast cycles. We are currently in the Fifth Root-Race, descending from earlier ethereal forms (First and Second Races) through denser material ones (Third and Fourth, including Atlantean).
The Doctrine emphasizes unity: All religions stem from one perennial truth; modern science glimpses but fragments of this ancient wisdom. Karma and reincarnation drive progress, with humanity evolving toward divine adeptship.
In essence, The Secret Doctrine teaches that the cosmos and soul are one eternal, cyclic process of becoming—from the unmanifest Absolute to manifestation and back—impelling all beings toward awakening in the boundless light of the One.
