The Enochian Magic System

 Enochian Magic System

The Enochian magic system, also known as Enochian magick or Angelical magic, is one of the most intricate and powerful ceremonial magic traditions in Western esotericism. It was developed in the late 16th century by
Dr. John Dee (the renowned Elizabethan mathematician, astrologer, and advisor to Queen Elizabeth I) and his scryer (medium) Edward Kelley. Through a series of visionary sessions using a crystal scrying stone, the pair claimed to receive direct communications from angels, who revealed a complete magical framework including a unique language, alphabet, cosmological structure, and ritual invocations.

The angels presented this as the primordial language spoken before the confusion of tongues at Babel — the same tongue used by the biblical patriarch Enoch (hence “Enochian”) to commune with divine beings.

Core Components of the Enochian System

The Enochian Alphabet and Language

At the foundation is the Enochian alphabet, a 21-letter script with angular, geometric forms unlike any human writing system. Each letter has its own name, sound, and mystical significance. The language itself (called “Angelical” by Dee) features its own grammar, syntax, and vocabulary, sounding guttural, powerful, and otherworldly when spoken aloud.

The language was received gradually between 1583 and 1589, with texts dictated through Kelley while Dee recorded them meticulously in his diaries.

The Great Table and Watchtowers (Elemental Tablets)

The central cosmological map is the Great Table (or Tabula Recensa), a massive grid of Enochian letters divided into four Watchtowers (corresponding to the classical elements and directions) plus a central Tablet of Union (representing Spirit, unifying the four elements).

•  Air Watchtower (East): Yellow – intellect, communication

•  Water Watchtower (West): Blue – emotions, intuition

•  Earth Watchtower (North): Black/Green – stability, material world

•  Fire Watchtower (South): Red – will, transformation

These tablets contain thousands of letter-squares from which divine names, angelic hierarchies, and words of power are extracted.

The 19 Angelical Keys (or Calls)

These are the primary invocations — 19 poetic verses in the Enochian language (with 48 verses total in some counts, but 19 distinct Keys). The first 18 open gates to elemental and sub-elemental realms on the Watchtowers, while the 19th (with modifications) accesses the 30 Aethyrs (spiritual planes or dimensions, from the material world outward to the highest divine realms).

The Keys are vibrated aloud to command angels, open portals, and invoke forces. Pronunciation is crucial, as errors were believed to risk disastrous consequences.

The 30 Aethyrs

A layered cosmology of 30 celestial realms (Aires), each governed by three Governors (91 total across the system). Practitioners scry or astrally project into these Aethyrs using the 19th Key (inserting the Aethyr’s name) to gain visions, initiations, and profound spiritual insights. Aleister Crowley famously scryed all 30 Aethyrs in 1909, documenting them in The Vision and the Voice.

Ritual Tools and Setup

Dee and Kelley used elaborate implements, including:

•  The Sigillum Dei Aemeth (“Seal of God the Truth”) — a complex wax disc inscribed with divine names and sigils, placed under the scrying stone.

•  The Holy Table with letters and symbols.

•  A black obsidian mirror or crystal for scrying.

Note: Dee’s earlier work, the Hieroglyphic Monad from 1564, also ties into Enochian symbolism as a unifying glyph of cosmic principles.)

Legacy and Modern Practice

Dee and Kelley never received complete practical instructions from the angels before their communications ended, so much of modern Enochian magic builds on their diaries (later edited and published). Organizations like the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn systematized it in the 19th century, influencing Aleister Crowley, Israel Regardie, and contemporary occultists.

Today, Enochian is considered “nuclear-grade” magic — immensely potent for angelic evocation, elemental work, astral travel, and spiritual transformation, but demanding rigorous study, purity of intent, and caution. Beginners are strongly advised to approach only after mastering foundational ceremonial magic.

This system remains a pinnacle of Renaissance occultism, blending science, mysticism, and divine revelation in a quest to understand and command the hidden forces of the universe.
